Piccolo, or Pico for short, was rescued with an eye infection about 10 years ago. His family took him to the emergency vet around Memorial Day weekend for what they thought was a mild sore in his mouth. Unfortunately, the vet found that Pico had an aggressive form of lung cancer and was near the end of his life. The vet allowed Pico's parents to take him home and he would be put to sleep in the comfort of his home, surrounded by the family who loves him.
Pico was a little shy and even more shy with his condition. When I arrived, he sat in his favorite spot - behind lush trailing plants in the family's backyard.
When I signed up for the Tilly Project, I knew it would not be easy. I met Pico one day before he was put to sleep. It was undeniable that Pico was an integral part of this family, and they were all touched deeply by what would happen the following day.
Because of his condition, I had to work quickly and couldn't take as many pictures as I wanted. But I hope the images I captured can offer some consolation and remind them of the bond and love they will forever share.
